The IMS Global Learning Consortium announces the start of a new activity in 'Federated Architectures'. During the past five years several initiatives, e.g. CORDRA, The EUN Learning Resource Exchange, GLOBE, have been proposed for federating e-learning systems to unlock the educational content hidden in their repositories. The usefulness of these initiatives has been demonstrated by several, large-scale demonstration projects that show clearly a demand for making learning content globally discoverable and exchangeable.
It is now timely to look at establishing the set of interoperability specifications that should be the basis of a federated architecture. This work will include defining new specifications as well as integrating those that are already in broad use e.g. SRW, SRU, LOM, etc. Another key component of this work will consider the integration of e-Learning systems and library assets.
An initial work programme produced by David Massart of European Schoolnet (EUN) is available. This is the ideal time to join this activity as you will be able to participate in defining the work programme to be undertaken.
IMS members can sign-up for this new activity use the URL: http://members.imsglobal.org/forum/ims/dispatch.cgi/FedArch
The meeting will be held at the IMS Quarterly meeting in Heerlen, Netherlands on 7th November, 2006. An agenda for this meeting will be posted at: http://www.imsglobal.org/ldsummit2006.html and registration for participation is at: http://www.imsglobal.org/ldsignup.cfm.
