EPUB for Education

Establishing a globally interoperable, accessible, open ecosystem for e-Textbooks and other Digital Learning Materials via EPUB 3, Educational Sector Standards and the Open Web Platform

Summary

In the 2014-2016 timeframe, IMS collaborated with IDPF and W3C on the EPUB for Education effort, intended to bring a profile of EPUB with support for IMS standards integration to the educational publishing market. In January 2017, IDPF combined with W3C, and since then activities have continued in the W3C EPUB 3 Community Group, as well as in the EPUB for Education Working Group at 1EdTech.

In May 2018, the IMS working group published the EPUB State and Results specification for 1EdTech member review and feedback in the forum. The standard provides a structured approach for supporting the passing of state and results data between an EPUB document and an EPUB Reading System. This standard based approach enables EPUB content authors to create interactive assessments and activities that can both save state and report results back to compliant Reading Systems.

This specification is to be regarded as an updated version of the IMS Learning Tools Interoperability® (LTI®) and Outcomes section in the latest published EPUB for Education draft.

The Working Group is currently proceeding with defining conformance criteria for implementations, building samples, and adding improvements and bug fixes to the draft specification.
