What is the CASE Digital Format?

CASE is the 1EdTech standard that a consistent format to exchange information about learning and education competencies, skills or academic standards in an open, machine-readable format.

Why is the CASE Standard Specification Important?

The 1EdTech Competencies and Academic Standards Exchange® (CASE®) standard facilitates the exchange of information about learning outcomes, competencies, and skills. By implementing CASE, it is possible to electronically exchange outcomes, skills, and competency definitions so applications, tools, and platforms can access the data so educators can act upon this data.

What is a CASE Framework?

CASE provides a framework for provisioning and transmitting a hierarchical digital document of a program of study, curriculum, or course:

Competency Framework Document Icon

Competency Framework Document - (CFdocument) is a digital version of the original competencies or academic standards document.

Competency Framework Item Icon

Competency Framework Item - (CFItem) is a statement of what the learner will know and be able to do.

Each CFitem has a Globally Unique Identifier (GUID).

Competency Framework Associations Icon

Competency Framework Associations - (CFAssociation) is used to map a relationship between entire standard sets or individual standards and courses.

Competency Framework Rubric Icon

Competency Framework Rubrics - (CFRubrics) are instruments used to delineate performance expectations around a task, product or performance that may or may not be aligned to standards

CASE Frameworks are published by the issuing organizations, commonly referred to as Issuers. Issuers are the authority or authors of the learning standards. For example, a state department of education is an Issuer of the complete curriculum and learning standards for that state.

Having Globally Universal Identifiers (GUIDs) for learning outcomes, skills, and competencies makes it possible for any tool or application to share information between systems internally or across the web. These tools and applications include learning management systems (LMS), student information systems (SIS), learning resources, assessment tools, curriculum management systems, and credentialing and hiring platforms.

How Does CASE Work?

  1. Issuing organizations (state department of education) use a certified CASE Provider (CCP) to publish their documents in CASE format. CCPs are companies that have a certified software/platform.
  2. Suppliers can become certified as CASE Consumers so they can ingest complete sets of CASE Frameworks. CASE consumers use the CASE Globally Unique Identifiers (GUIDs) to tag resources to learning standards.
  3. A district adopts learning resources with CASE GUIDs identifying the learning standards/competencies for each lesson in each course.
  4. Teachers and course designers build lesson plans aligned with the learning standards.
  5. Assessments and activities are aligned with the lesson's learning standards.
  6. Systems can report learning outcomes based on the activities and assessments’ results.
  7. Teachers and students can provide additional resources, as needed for learning success.

CASE Network 2, hosted by Common Good Learning Tools

CASE Network 2 is a central repository of K-12 state academic standards and competencies frameworks and other national learning standards. CASE Network 2 has evolved from the legacy CASE Network. Academic and Competency Frameworks are published by the issuing organizations, such as state departments of education (also called “Issuers”), and mirrored in CASE Network 2. To learn more, please visit the CASE Network 2 information page.

CASE Network 2 is hosted by Common Good Learning Tools and supported by leading state departments of education (DOE), education districts, and edtech suppliers.

    Getting Involved

Our community of institution and supplier members collaborates in 1EdTech Leadership groups to advance education technology innovation, promote interoperability, and support learner achievement and outcomes.

    1. Digital Curriculum Product Steering Committee (PSC):  Composed of Contributing Members who have demonstrated leadership in advancing the adoption of the CASE, Common Cartridge/Thin Common Cartridge, and/or the LTI Resource standard, promote certifications, and provide market-based information that aids in the evolution of CASE, Common Cartridge/Thin Common Cartridge, and/or the LTI Resource standards.
    2. CASE Project Workgroup: Involves Contributing Member institutions and suppliers, including product managers, developers, architects, and district-level staff.
    3. Roundtables: Roundtables can be member and/or public-facing informational events. Workgroups and PSCs organize roundtable discussions as they see fit to promote and expand the member-based knowledge and understanding of how specification implementations can or are impacting education.
    4. Quarterly In-Person Events: Learning Impact, Quarterly Technical Meetings, Digital Curriculum Innovation Summit, etc.

Are Your Products 1 EdTech Certified?

1EdTech has testing programs that enable products to be certified compliant with specific standards and features of the standards. For technology suppliers, participation in the 1EdTech certification process is the fastest and most cost-effective way to achieve product integrations. For institutions, ensuring that your educational technology tools are 1EdTech certified is the best way to establish a plug-and-play ecosystem, allowing your tools and content to work together seamlessly, giving you more choices, and reducing your total cost of ownership. 1EdTech members have access to expert support to implement the standards prior to completing conformance certification.
