Leveraging Web Applications and Enterprise Integration to Enable Innovation and Creativity in Teaching and Learning

Learning Impact 2009 is IMS Global Learning Consortium's annual conference that brings together the world's leading creators, vendors, users, and buyers of learning technology to participate in program tracks focused on the latest innovations in learning systems, digital learning content, the learning enterprise, and open technologies. Presenters answer a key challenge question designed to inform the attendees on the state of innovation and best practices.

The Summit on Global Learning Industry Challenges is a gathering of industry leaders to introduce and debate ideas on issues impacting the growth of learning worldwide. This is a unique and highly direct conversation for the purpose of illuminating the key business challenges facing the learning industry. The Summit is facilitated by a focused set of highly interactive panel sessions with audience participation.

The Learning Impact Awards are designed to recognize the most impactful use of technology worldwide in support of learning. This unique program evaluates established, new, and research efforts in context at an implementing learning institution.

Keynote Speakers:

Dr. Malcolm Read, Executive Secretary, Joint Information Systems Committee, United Kingdom

Dr. Malcolm Read graduated in 1973 with a degree in Environmental Science from the University of East Anglia and went on to do a PhD at the University of Manchester on the hydrometeorology of a glacial catchment. He then worked in the Overseas Development Administration before moving to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) in 1979. He ran the computer department at the Institute of Hydrology before moving into administrative computing to head the Joint Administrative Computing Service of NERC and the, then, Science and Engineering Research Council in 1988.

Since July 1993 Dr. Read has worked for the Higher and Further Education Funding Councils as the Executive Secretary to the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC). Apart from his overall responsibility for the Executive he has been particularly involved in ICT policy and strategy development in post 16 education and research. He is also Chairman of the European Networking Policy Group.

Martin Bean
General Manager, WW Education Strategy, Products & Solutions
Microsoft Corporation

Martin Bean is General Manager of Worldwide Education Strategy, Products and Solutions at Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington. Martin has over 18 years in the training and education marketplace and is a recognized industry leader around the world. He has held executive management roles in several leading organizations including AIESEC International, Novell, Sylvan Learning Systems, Thomson Learning, and New Horizons Computer Learning Centers, Inc.

As a long-standing pioneer in the education industry, Martin has presented to the U.S. Senate as part of the Technology Workforce Coalition on the importance of IT in the Workforce Investment Act. He has also testified on behalf of the Workforce Coalition before the Subcommittee on Oversight of the House Committee on Ways and Means. In January 2004, he moderated a Town Hall entitled "Conversation with the President," for President George W. Bush that focused on U.S. technology workforce needs in the 21st Century.

Dedicated to the continued advancement of the education industry, he is actively involved in representing the IT industry in a variety of public policy issues and is committed to advocating federal and state level solutions to address the IT worker shortage and the reform of education to meet the needs of today's workforce.

Martin is an often-quoted industry spokesperson and author. He has been instrumental in the development of tools targeted at sales professions in the IT industry, including the highly successful "Money Maker" training program and his insightful book, Selling IT Training, A Guide to Successful Selling in the IT Learning Industry. Martin currently resides in Bellevue, Washington, with his wife and three daughters.

Maruja Gutierrez-Diaz
Head of Unit Innovation and Creativity at European Commission, DG EAC

Maruja Gutierrez-Diaz has degrees in architecture and in urban planning from the School of Architecture, (Polytechnic University - Madrid, 1971). She was a Postgraduate Researcher at the Planning Research Unit, University of Edinburgh; specialist in computer-aided planning techniques. After some years as Consultant, she was appointed as Head of the Centre for Information and Documentation of the Madrid Regional Government, in charge of both technical and citizen oriented information systems. 

She joined the European Commission in 1988, as specialist in new technologies. First, as Deputy Head of the Central Library, in charge of its modernisation and networking. Since 1995, as Head of the Publications Unit, member of the Europa server launching team and of the interinstitutional editorial board. In October 1999, she became Head of the new unit Multimedia - Culture, Education, Training, in charge of the eLearning initiative and today she is Head of Unit Lifelonglearning: Innovation and Creativity.

Professor Denise Kirkpatrick
Pro Vice-Chancellor Learning, Teaching and Quality
The Open University

Professor Denise Kirkpatrick is Pro Vice-Chancellor Learning and Teaching at The Open University where she is responsible for leading the production and delivery of the university’s learning materials and researching new applications of ICT in supported open learning. She is responsible for the development of university policy relating to the application of new media and Quality Assurance and standards. She was previously Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at La Trobe University in Australia and has worked in a number of Australian universities as an academic, and in the area of teaching and learning policy and practice, with an emphasis on the application of new media. Her recent research investigates the ways Millennials approach learning and ways of creating effective and engaging learning experiences for these students. Her previous research has investigated effective design for learning with new technologies and student engagement in e-learning. She developed the award winning Mekong e-Sim an online role play simulation which was used to teach students in Australian and Malaysian universities and recently completed the CATS project - Creating Accessible Teaching and Support -a suite of projects to support staff teaching students with disabilities. Denise was President of the Australasian Council on Open Distance and E-Learning (ACODE).

Michael King
Vice President, IBM Global Education Industry

Michael King, Vice President, Global Education Industry, has been with IBM for over 20 years in various executive and management positions. He is currently the worldwide leader for the IBM Education Industry. In this role, he leads IBM's strategy, marketing and sales across schools and higher education. His prior responsibilities include Director, Market Development, Education Industry, focused on solutions and innovation projects, and Director, Alliances for IBM Learning Solutions, where he led a team in developing partnerships across the learning marketplace, including corporate education. He served as the lead market manager for learning in IBM, launching important corporate solution initiatives in Europe and globally. Prior positions include the Global Segment Executive for the IBM Education industry, leading the strategy for delivering solutions and products to higher education and primary school institutions around the world, and also the worldwide marketing manager for higher education. IBM's broad portfolio of offerings in Education Industry includes hardware and software products, business and IT services, and specific industry initiatives, such as open source software, grid computing, and other leading technologies.

Mr. King has also served as the client executive with responsibility for research universities in California, including the University of California system. In that position, he worked with leading universities in developing creative technology solutions for administrative and academic applications.

Mr. King holds Bachelor's of Science degrees in Physics and Engineering from Kansas State University and an MBA from the University of California, Los Angeles. He is a member of the California P16 Education Advisory Council.
