IMS Global is leading the development of an Extended Transcript (eT) designed to support competency-based programs as well communicate a variety of a learner's achievements. This prototype is an example of a modern, web-based extended transcript, flexible enough to support the descriptive nature of competency reporting and targets the needs of learners, registrars, and employers. The vision for eT is transformative in its potential, beyond providing relevant student competencies and skills. Based on the IMS Global's work in digital credentials, closely following the developing registrar guidance of AACRAO, and leveraging the Open Badges standard and those of the W3C, the vision for eT is a secure, student-centered digital record for the 21st century.
The Extended Transcript (eT) standard supports a new generation of secure verifiable digital academic and non-traditional transcripts for learners, containing a variety of learning experiences including courses, competencies, skills, co-curricular achievements, internships and experiential learning - and more.
Extended Transcripts are part of the IMS digital credentials portfolio. Competencies and Academic Standards Exchange® (CASE®) and Open Badges are compatible with Extended Transcripts.
Personal, Portable Credentials
The flexible yet sophisticated eT data design supports formal and informal learning from K-20 and into employment, in a web-ready linked-data document.
Viewing Extended Transcripts
Applications that support eT can visually render the underlying data in the form that best meets their learner's needs. The example below is one user experience, yours can be totally unique while still using the eT as its data foundation.

IMS member Learning Objects has contributed a general purpose eT viewer that can be used to display the content of any compliant eT record.
eT Data Model
The eT data model is flexible and supports many types of records and relationships. Its support for JSON-LD ensures that Extended Transcripts are highly compatible with the structured data ecosystem of digital credentials.

- How to get your eT product IMS certified (coming soon)
In 2015, the IMS Global CBE Workgroup took on five common issues in competency-based education, based on research conducted with 35 C-BEN institutions. The use cases selected involved the management of essential competency data and the exchange of CBE information between systems in an institutions' technical environment. The project is led by contributing member institutions and brings together designers and product architects from major software suppliers and innovative new entrants to collaborate on the data standards needed to facilitate the CBE data exchange.
5 Pilot Use Cases
- Manage Competencies in an integrated database (including versions and course relationships as needed)
- Report Evaluation Results
- Provide Non-Term Program Information
- Capture Student-Faculty Interaction
- Publish a CBE eTranscript
