API’s: A Better Strategy for Higher Education ERP Integration

Frustration with legacy ERP systems in higher education is high and still growing. On-premise systems have been heavily customized incurring a high level of technical debt, and while migration to SaaS-based systems seems inevitable, transition costs and risks are substantial. Creating a microservices/API integration layer that allows the creation of microservices offers a survival strategy for the next five-ten years. We will outline potential strategies, including a new effort to develop a standardized set of interactions that have the potential to improve agility, reduce costs, and provide a clearer path towards SaaS ERPs.

Speakers: Michael Berman (California State University), Jack Suess (University of Maryland, Baltimore County), Linda Feng (Unicon, Inc.)

Date/Time: Wednesday, October 31, 2:30 PM - 3:15 PM

1EdTech Workshop for HED Institutional Members

LTI Advantage: Your Path to Student Data Privacy and Security

A key principle driving the evolution of Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) is better security. LTI Advantage ensures user privacy and learning data security by utilizing the latest security model based on industry best practices. This session will explore how LTI Advantage addresses institutional concerns about learning data security between the LMS and learning tools. Attendees will also get the latest on LTI Insights, a new project bringing LTI and Caliper Analytics together for increased trust in the data passing between learning tools and platforms, and better transparency into tool use on campus.

1EdTech members are invited to attend this half-day workshop on the strengthened and flexible security in LTI v1.3 and LTI Advantage. Lunch will be provided. Space is limited, so you must register in advance (login required).

12:45 – 1:00 p.m. Welcome and Introductions

1:00 – 1:45 p.m. The LTI “Advantage”: Driving Value and Innovation On Your Campus

LTI Advantage was announced during EDUCAUSE 2017 with great enthusiasm by institutions and suppliers as a solution to making interoperability easier, more cost-effective, and secure. We’ll kick off this 1EdTech member meeting by sharing the extraordinary accomplishments this past year to fast-track adoption of LTI Advantage at a pace never seen before--led in large part by the platform providers and other Contributing Member collaborations. A panel of platform and tool suppliers with share the role LTI Advantage will play in their product's strategy, in the short and longer term. Will also highlight the security and usability benefits that provide institutions with the most secure way to protect student data and privacy from their integrations.

1:45 – 2:30 p.m. Seal of Approval: Support, Certification and Working with Your Vendors
What does it mean for a vendor to be “1EdTech Certified?” And is that the same thing as “Support for LTI” (or any other 1EdTech specification)? 1EdTech Director of Higher Education Programs Cary Brown will walk you through what it means for your institution to work with 1EdTech Certified suppliers, and 1EdTech member institutions will share their strategies for encouraging and enforcing supplier conformance as part of the procurement process.

2:30 – 3:30 p.m. The Intersection of Tools and Data: Stop Signs or Green Lights?
The integrated digital ecosystem provides a number of advantages, but one of the biggest, and least understood is a common “highway” for the data flowing through your system. The new LTI Insights initiative from 1EdTech leverages the 1EdTech Caliper specification for learning data analytics and combines it with the secure, standardized connectivity of LTI to pull together a deep view into how, when, where and by whom tools are being utilized in your online teaching and learning environment. Join, and contribute to, an open discussion about this brand new offering from 1EdTech, and share and discuss requirements on your campus to help us shape LTI Insights to meet your needs!

3:30 – 4:00 p.m. Moving the Ball Downfield: LTI and the Future of Interoperability
LTI Advantage marks a revolutionary step forward for the extremely successful LTI specification and what it means for safe, fast and easy integrations between learning platforms and tools. How can Higher Education come together as a community of institutions and suppliers to continue the adoption curve and drive the next generation of the integrated digital environment?
