Caliper defines a number of metric profiles, each of which models a learning activity or a supporting activity that helps facilitate learning. Each profile provides a domain-specific set of terms and concepts that application designers and developers can draw upon to describe common user interactions in a consistent manner using a shared vocabulary. Annotating a reading, playing a video, taking a test, or grading an assignment submission represent a few examples of the many activities or events that Caliper's metric profiles attempt to describe. The Caliper 1.1 profiles include (with brief summaries below):
- Annotation Profile
- Assessment Profile
- Assignable Profile
- Forum Profile
- Grading Profile
- Media Profile
- Reading Profile
- Session Profile
- Tool Use Profile
- Basic Profile
Follow learners as they bookmark content, highlight selected text, and tag digital resources. Analyze annotations to better assess learner engagement, comprehension and satisfaction with the materials assigned.
As learners take assessments and engage with individual assessment items, track attempts, completion times, and item skips and responses. Analyze test-taking patterns alongside learning data that provide insights into test prep behavior.
While learners work on assignments, track attempts and time on task. Combine data with performance measures to assess the efficacy of assigned resources, learner engagement, and comprehension.
Monitor discussion forum participation. Forums typically encompass one or more threads or topics to which members can subscribe, post messages and reply to other messages if a threaded discussion is permitted. Identify popular topics and posts that generate the most replies. Perform sentiment analysis on message content.
Add assignment and assessment attempt scoring to the event stream. Compare scores to learner data that sheds light on study and/or test prep behaviors.
Explore learner interactions with audio, images, and video. Track media usage, navigation activity, and viewing patterns. Combine data with performance measures to assess the efficacy of assigned resources, learner engagement, and comprehension.
Collect usage data on e-book, e-text, and other text-based digital resources. Track usage, navigation activity, and viewing patterns. Combine data with performance measures to assess the efficacy of assigned resources, learner engagement, and comprehension.
Track user logins, logouts, and session timeouts. Provide baseline metrics for platform and app usage. Record session start times, end times, and duration. Determine intervals between site visits.
Tool Use Profile
Record when a learner utilizes a tool as intended by its author(s). Measure which tools are being used, how often, and by which users.
Leverage Caliper's actions and entities to describe learning or supporting activities that have yet to be profiled.
