IMS Global Learning Consortium Releases Learning Tools Interoperability™ v2

New version will improve the cost and time for implementation of digital learning content and applications

Lake Mary, Florida, USA – February 24, 2014 - IMS Global Learning Consortium, the world’s leading educational technology advancement and technical standards setting collaborative, has announced the release of the public specification of Learning Tools Interoperability v2 (LTI™ 2), which enables automated 1-click integration of a wide variety of educational apps and digital content with the educational enterprise at a 10-100x improvement over alternative integration methods.

Learning Tools Interoperability establishes a standard way of integrating rich learning applications and digital content with enterprise platforms like learning management systems, portals, or other educational environments. LTI v2 builds upon the widely adopted LTI v1 standard by providing a more sophisticated and extensible platform to enable deeper integrations and greater support for services and events. LTI v2 also provides enhanced outcomes reporting and a full extensions architecture allowing additional services to be added gradually using REST and JSON-LD to deliver this new functionality. 

IMS Global Contributing Member organizations that actively participated in the LTI v2 working group to lead the development and release of the enhanced specification, include: Blackboard, Canvas, Cengage, Desire2Learn, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Pearson, University of Michigan, and Vital Source. "The leadership of these organizations has been a key factor in realizing LTI v2,” said Dr. Rob Abel, Chief Executive of IMS. “Adoption of LTI v2 will radically change the ease in which institutions, teachers and students can innovate with the explosion of learning tools and applications to create personalized learning pathways.”

“Technology is at the core of teaching and learning, but all too often it is difficult to add and remove digital applications in the learning environment. LTI v2 is groundbreaking in that it will make it easier to integrate digital applications, which will allow for a new culture of experimentation,” said Chuck Severance, Clinical Associate Professor of Information at the University of Michigan School of Information.
