In Remembrance of Mark Stiles
The 1EdTech community is sad to learn of the passing of former 1EdTech Board Member, Mark Stiles. Mark represented JISC on the 1EdTech Board from 2008 to 2015. His contribution to 1EdTech and its members was truly appreciated. You can see more details on Mark's contributions on the Association for Learning Technology website.
“I was very saddened to hear of the passing of our friend and colleague, Mark Stiles," said Dr. Rob Abel, 1EdTech CEO. "Mark served on the 1EdTech Board of Directors representing JISC during a prior administration. We could always count on Mark to give his best advice and counsel on all matters related to 1EdTech. Mark was a person that always took the high road in terms of wanting to genuinely help all organizations and interests make progress together—and we could always count on him to speak up. He was an extremely colorful individual that made friends out of strangers easily. 1EdTech wants Mark’s family to know that he made a great contribution to our work and will be remembered by many of his colleagues here forever."
“Mark was extremely committed to his role as the UK JISC representative on the 1EdTech Board, a role which he fulfilled successfully for over a decade," said Professor Paul Hollins. "Behind the Beard, there was a deep thinker, who always placed the learner at the core. His understanding of educational technology and the higher education sector in the UK was unsurpassed. Mark loved a good quality beer and whilst in the U.S. at 1EdTech gatherings we spent many an hour sampling them. His contribution to 1EdTech was significant and his informed and timely interventions into the 1EdTech working groups, specifically QTI, helped ensure adoption and success of the specifications and the organization broadly. He will be missed.”

A great loss
I met Mark thorugh a combination of JISC work, IMS work and consulting work I did at Staffordshire University. I can remember talking at length with Mark about how as a student he was kicked out of the various left wing groups at his University "for being too left wing!", something he was always very proud of.
Mark was passionate about education and how it could transform the lives of the poorest in society.
My deepest condolences to Mark's family.
