In the fall, the Competency-Based Education Network (C-BEN) held its third annual CBExchange, a sold-out event focused solely on helping institutions develop and manage competency-based education programs.
Several 1EdTech Consortium members and partners played an active role in the agenda.
Tom Greene, associate executive director, AACRAO; Joellen Shendy, associate vice provost and registrar, University of Maryland University College and Mark Leuba, vice president product management, 1EdTech Consortium kicked off the program in a panel moderated by Amber Garrison Duncan, Ph.D., strategy director of the Lumina Foundation, on CBE and the higher education landscape where the discussion on 1EdTech initiatives for competency and digital credentials were front and center.
Jeff Grann (Capella University), Joellen Shendy, Andrea Deau (University of Wisconsin Extension), and Deborah Everhart (Learning Objects) then joined up for a presentation on the new 1EdTech
Competencies and Academic Standards Exchange™ (CASE™) and
Extended Transcript standards. 1EdTech member Brandman University, also a leader in the C-BEN community, presented a series of best practice panels.
C-BEN and 1EdTech previously collaborated on the Technical Interoperability Pilot (TIP) research project led by Mark Leuba, which provided valuable insights into common problems hampering the scalability of CBE programs. CASE for higher education and the Extended Transcript standards were born of the 1EdTech and C-BEN collaboration.
“1EdTech Consortium is a valued partner of C-BEN and our member institutions who need to rely on interoperable technology to manage their programs effectively. Specialized software that supports competency-based education is often acquired as a plug-into an institution’s LMS and other systems. Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) has been a major accelerator for the support of CBE, and the new Extended Transcript and CASE standards are welcome additions to solving big problems for institutions.”
—Charla Long, Executive Director, Competency-Based Education Network
