Enabling All Learners to Achieve Without Limits

During this opening keynote, Dr. Rob Abel, CEO of 1EdTech Consortium presents the latest status and areas of focus for 1EdTech. Dr. Abel discusses highlights from the 1EdTech annual report for 2020 and also provides details of progress through 2021 up until mid-August. 1EdTech is currently growing membership at a record rate as the advantages of collaboration on educational technology have come to the fore via the COVID era, but are also clearly of great importance into the future as the use of technology to support learning grows. Some of the focus areas discussed include the 1EdTech TrustEd Apps program, LTI Advantage, Digital Credentials, and a new trend of utilizing 1EdTech Caliper and other standards to enable architecture for educational research.

1EdTech Chief Architect Colin Smythe answers questions about 1EdTech technical standards in a Q&A session, and presents on:

Improving EdTech Interoperability: Conformance, Certification, and Characterization

Certification is an important part of the 1EdTech EdTech ecosystem. Certification demonstrates the vendor's commitment to creating a sustainable EdTech ecosystem. One of the benefits of 1EdTech membership is the ability to list certified products under the 1EdTech product directory. This directory is the official list of products that have passed the 1EdTech Interoperability Certification. The corresponding conformance test system is created as part of the development of the 1EdTech specification. These conformance testing systems are used to demonstrate certification. We introduced characterization as part of our efforts to improve support for adoption and adaptation of 1EdTech specifications. The characterization provides more details on how the deployed system supports the relevant 1EdTech EdTech interoperability specifications. In this presentation, the 1EdTech Chief Architect explains:

  1. Importance of conformity and certification.
  2. Why compliance is not a useful measure of interoperability.
  3. How can characterizations be used to ensure interoperability?
  4. How can the Japanese 1EdTech community begin preparing to use characterization?
